GTT (Gone to Texas)

Last Wednesday (was it really almost a week ago?), I spent the morning working. Then packing. Packing for our trip to Texas. To visit family. Or maybe really to go to the Austin City Limits Festival, since both my mom and sister were in other cities.

Packing has gotten to be quite easy. The girls still do forget one thing or another each time, but overall it is a smooth process. And we are bringing less and less each time. We ended up with one small suitcase, a cooler and three backpacks ... sure makes it easier to stop at a hotel for the night.

I decided that even though we can make the trip in one day, we'd break up the trip so I could work mornings and drive afternoons. We took our time, stopping at random places like the Target in Oxford, AL to pick up new water bottles. And at the Texas Welcome Center to take a photo. And, of course, we stopped at Chloe's favorite gas station and took a photo of her favorite sink.

The girls spent the trip working on their homeschooling, reading and playing a little bit on their DSes. We also listened a bit to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Nothing too remarkable about the trip, apart from seeing the trailer full of sweet potatoes. Took us a while to figure that one out!

Happy Birthday, Camille!

Yikes! A week has gone by without my updating the blog....I guess I've been preoccupied with other things, like getting us to Austin and working.

Last Saturday, Camille turned 11! To celebrate, we tried to get her a new passport, but that plan was quickly scratched. Instead, we went out for brunch at Thumbs Up. Chloe hadn't wanted to go since she wasn't sure if the cafe had whipped cream for her waffle, so we first stopped at Kroger and bought a can of whipped cream and brought it in with us. Chloe didn't want me to -- she thought people would laugh at her. I reassured her that people would think that she had the best parents in the world...

In the evening, Claire and her dad came over to help us celebrate with Camille's choice for dinner, an ice cream cake and some gifts. Camille was pretty thrilled with it all, but can't wait for her BIG gift -- a trip to the Myrtle Beach MagiQuest in January with two friends.

What I Learned Today

Flood:

Language Arts:

Seattle? Atlantis? Where are we?

What's that bright orb up there in the sky? For a while there, we felt that we had been transplanted to Seattle. Day after day of gray, rainy skies. And then the torrential storms came...the ground was already saturated, so with no place for the water to go, it headed to the creeks and rivers. Those had as much as they could hold, so they flooded.

Pine Lake and Snapfinger creek both swelled and merged into one great big river. Many of our neighbors' houses were flooded by this major flood. The berm appears to potentially be in danger of collapse. If that happens, the lake will drain out Snapfinger Creek until we can get it repaired. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

What I Learned Today

books:

Camping at last

I have a fond memory of camping as a kid. Sleeping in the tent, drinking hot tang and playing in the "woods" around the site.

In fact, Rob and I registered for a tent, sleeping pads, a camp stove, etc. for our wedding and took it all with us to go camping at Cinnamon Bay National Park on St. John, USVI. We went camping a bit in Maryland, but then once we had Camille, we rarely went anymore. In fact, I think our last camping trip was BEFORE Chloe was born. What happened?

This past weekend, Rob took the kids to Florida and I went camping (5 miles from home, but still camping) with my book club. We cooked over the camp stove, sat around the campfire, and slept in tents. In fact, I slept in my 20 year old LLBean (has the "old" LL Bean label) sleeping bag, with no pillow and no sleeping pad. And it was FUN!

This was good practice for me. I'm taking the girls camping in a few weeks. I believe that we will have some local friends with us -- we are heading to LEAF, and I am very much looking forward to it.

What I Learned Today

pets:

  • Gazoo, our kitty, loves to help me feed the turtle (Dumbledore) twice a day. Turtle food is her absolute favorite treat. Cat nip does nothing for her, but the turtle food? Makes her go nuts.
