- telnet on a Mac: Applications > Utilities > Terminal -- but I command-c didn't provide me with Ctrl-c, so I couldn't escape a telnet to a machine for which I had no user/pwd

but control-C (using the actual control key) should work. It does a ^C on my terminal apps.
Control-c didn't work for me, but perhaps I had hit so manty keys that I confused the terminal.
I see what you mean about the Electric Car video -- what a lovely visual!
